Mt. Nun 7135m is of the tallest mountains of the Suru valley-Zanskar ranges of Ladakh, India. It’s the taller peak of the Nun-Kun Massif, where Mt.Kun stands at 7077m. The climb of Mt.Nun is of the greatest mountaineering challenges of the region. Sheer altitude over 7000m, fixed rope climbing above 6500m are just a few challenges that one encounters on the mountain. This peak is perfect pre-Everest/8000m preparatory climb, ticking off almost all the boxes of a guided mountaineering expedition.

Who Can Climb?

Climbing Mt.Nun is an extremely challenging peak that tests the climber in all aspects. It can be classified as a semi-technical climb, requiring the knowledge of all mountaineering aspects.

To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of pre-requisites that are required to climb Mt.Nun

Physical Fitness:

Climbers are expected to have an exceptional level of physical fitness. Consistent, structured training specific to mountaineering over a period of 8-12 months will be an absolute requirement for anyone looking to climb this peak. One must be able to trek 6-8 hrs comfortably carrying a backpack weighing 10-15 kgs.

Mountaineering Experience:

Prior mountaineering experience will be essential for climbing Mt.Nun. It is required by the climbers to have done several high altitude treks (3000m-5000m) and preferably a couple of 5000m/6000m, before attempting this peak. For those who have already done a 6000m peak, will have an added advantage. Climbers are expected to be well versed in layering, acclimatization protocols, being able to use all snow & ice equipment, camp-life & ability to stay in an alpine environment for 3-4 weeks.

Tentative Climbing Itinerary

Arrival in Leh & Acclimatisation
We shall receive you at the airport in Leh (3500m) and transfer to the hotel. Our guide will meet you at the hotel and brief you about the upcoming climb. The first day will be spent resting at the hotel. In the subsequent days, we shall hike to progressively higher grounds for acclimatisation and return each day to the hotel. The remaining time will be spent going in and around the places of interest in Leh.
Drive to Kargil
Today we get on a day long drive from Leh to Kargil (2600m), through the barren landscape of Ladakh. Enroute we make quick stops at few places of interest and lunch. Overnight stay in hotel.
Drive to Tangol
Post an early breakfast, we take a 5 hr drive to the village of Tangol (3700m), our last road head. Tonight we begin our camp-life with an over night stay in the tents. Once we reach Tangol, we spend the rest of the evening organizing our gear for the next day and walking around the scenic village.
Tangol to Base Camp
Today we begin our hike towards the base camp at 4600m. The hike will take about 5-6 hrs, on rocky moraine. Overnight camping.
Base Camp-Summit Climbing Period
This period is reserved for climbing to Camp-1(5468m), Camp-2 (5990m) & Camp-3 (6436m) in phased manner. This will allow us sufficient time for our bodies to acclimatize. The period also includes rest day for recovery and spare days (to account for inclement weather, if any).
Return to Base Camp Today we descend to the base camp from Camp-1. We ensure that the entire camps site is left clean and carry all the trash back down to the base camp. The day also marks our victory party of the summit.
Drive Back to Kargil
We begin an early hike and descend down to Tangol. From here we board our vehicles and drive to Kargil. Overnight stay in Hotel.
Drive to Leh
This will be the last day spend in Ladakh. We begin the day by driving down from Kargil to Leh. We reach Leh in the evening and spend the rest of the night in hotel.
Drop-off at the Airport
Our vehicle will drop you off at the airport in Leh.

    FAQs

    Mt.Nun is a very challenging peak and it is not recommended for first-time climbers. Aspiring climbers are required to have atleast 2-3 climbs/treks varying between 3000-5000m. Having climbed a sub 6000m peak will be an added advantage.
    It totally depends on the previous training history and experience of the climber. Regular hikers having and excellent level of fitness can attempt this peak with minimum preparation time of 4-6 months. For an absolute novice, a minimum of 8-12 months of consistent preparation is required. Visit our ‘Training’ page for more info
    All team meals will be served during the designated meal times. However, our dining hut will always be well stocked with hot beverages, ready to eat food items during the entire duration of the climb
