Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, located in Northeast Tanzania, near the Kenya border. It is an extinct volcano, and world’s highest free-standing mountain at 5893 m.

Climbing Klimanjaro intrigues the climbers by its uniqueness. Its slopes are covered by a variety of vegetation as well as a variety of ecological systems. Plantations, mostly of coffee, for which Tanzania is famous for, cover its lowest slopes. Higher up lies a tropical rainforest, followed by heath, moor land, alpine deserts and the ice-capped summit.

Who Can Climb?

Climbing Mt.Kilimanjaro can be a perfect peak for your first high-altitude pursuit. The mountain is non-technical in nature and offers very little challenges. But, make no mistake. These little challenges can be super serious if not trained well before hand.Climbers are recommended to have an excellent level of fitness, which will form the foundation of not just this peak, but to all of their future climbing endeavors.

To make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of pre-requisites that are required to climb Mt.Kilimanjaro:

Physical Fitness:

Climbers are expected to have an exceptional level of physical fitness. Consistent, structured training specific to mountaineering over a period of 6-8 months will be an absolute requirement for anyone looking to climb this peak. One must be able to trek 6-8 hrs comfortably carrying a backpack weighing 10-15 kgs.

Mountaineering Experience:

Though prior mountaineering experience will be an added advantage, no specific mountaineering experience is required for climbing this peak.

Tentative Climbing Itinerary

Arrival in Kilimanjaro
Arrive Kilimanajro international Airport in Tanzania. We will receive and transfer to hotel at Moshi. Complete documentation and any purchases / rental of Personal equipment will be done on this day.
Hike to Machame Camp
Today we drive from our hotel and get dropped off at the Machame gate. We begin our hike from here and reach the Machame camp after hiking for about 6-7 hrs.
Hike to Shira Camp
After a good night’s rest, we are in for a comparatively shorter climbing day. We proceed on a 4-6 hrs hike towards Shira camp. We spend the rest of the evening/night enjoying the fantastic views the Serengeti has to offer.
Hike to Barranco Camp
Today we head towards Barranco camp and the duration of the hike will about 6-8 hrs. From this point we breach the high-altitude limit (above 3500m) and start to feel the thin air.
Hike to Karanga Camp
After the previous long day, today we have a leisure start to the next camp. After an enriching breakfast, we begin our 4-5 hrs hike towards Karanga Camp.
Hike to Barafu Camp
This will be a challenging day as we keep gaining more altitude and the effects of very high altitude are felt on our bodies. It takes about 4-5 hrs to reach the Barafu camp.
Summit Attempt
The big day of the summit attempt will be today! From the Barafu camp, it takes about 7-8 hrs to reach the summit (Uhuru peak) and another 4-6 hrs of descent all the way down to Mweka hut.
Descend to Moshi
On the last day on the mountain we descend down to the Mweka gate and then drive down to the hotel at Moshi. The duration of the hike is about 3-4 hrs. Tonight will be a farewell dinner at the hotel.
Drop off at the Airport
After Breakfast team will be dropped at Kilimanjaro International Airport for further transfer.

    FAQs

    Yes, with proper training and preparation one can aspire to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro as their first peak.
    It totally depends on the previous training history and experience of the climber. Regular hikers having and excellent level of fitness can attempt this peak with minimum preparation. For an absolute novice, a minimum of 6-8 months of consistent preparation is required. Visit our ‘Training’ page for more info
    We would say that it’s a matter of personal preference. Climbing this mountain offers the a slightly different experience from each route. For example, the accommodation on the mountain in the Machame route is provided in tents, while it’s in the huts on the Marangu route.
    All team meals will be served during the designated meal times. However, our dining tent will always be well stocked with hot beverages, ready to eat food items during the entire duration of the climb
